JUNE 2018 NEWSLETTER No. 150

BOLLETTINO Numero 150

Hello everyone

Ciao a tutti

EMILIA ROMAGNA RATED NO.1

Those 22 members who have signed up for this year’s holiday to Bologna will be further gratified to learn that the region was recently rated by Lonely Planet as the number one place to visit in Europe this year. The rationale can be found at:

https://inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyle/travel/the-best-places-to-visit-in-europe-in-2018-according-to-lonely-planet/

BASILICATA FACES DEPOPULATION

Visitors to this region of southern Italy may find it idyllic but the young citizens of the area are quitting in droves to find work elsewhere. Southern Italy has an average unemployment figure of 31% but Basilicata’s is 38%. The population loss coupled with a very low birth rate (7 per 1000) is such that the region’s current 570,000 population is predicted to drop to 450,000 by 2050, approx. the population level of the 1800s. SONG OF THE MONTH

This month’s choice is by Sue Holder and it is Takagi & Ketra – L’esercito del selfie ft. Lorenzo Fragola, Arisa watch and listen to it at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQkaH5ppFek

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Io no ho paura / I’m not afraid by Niccolo’ Ammaniti

Available in English and Italian. One relentlessly hot summer, six children explore the scorched wheat-fields that enclose their tiny Italian village. When the gang find a dilapidated farmhouse, nine-year-old Michele Amitrano makes a discovery so momentous he dare not tell a soul. It is a secret that will force Michele to question everything and everyone around him. An unputdownable thriller, I’m Not Scared is also a devastatingly authentic portrayal of childhood and the tension arising when joining the adult world.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

To chime with our Bologna themed issue, Laura suggests “Ragu’ alla Bolognese” not to be confused with Spag Bol! The recipe can be found on the SAIS web site.

ARTWORK OF THE MONTH

Continuing the theme of artworks linked to Bologna which is the home of the museum dedicated to the life and work of Giorgio Morandi, so we are featuring a characteristic still life.
